Hostel "eco-Ostello LOCRIDE"

eco-Ostello LOCRIDE is the confiscated property managed by GOEL – Cooperative Group. It is a contemporary eco-friendly accommodation. The refurbishment has been made possible thanks to a project supported by Fondazione Con Il Sud and Fondazione Peppino Vismara. It is an example of social and environmental sustainability.

Services: restaurant, solarium, break room, wi-fi, elevator, laundry room, green lighting, photovoltaic electricity, solar thermal energy, natural body care products, eco-detergents or detergents from recycled materials, eco-friendly paper, digital information material, organic linens, organic breakfast and air quality monitoring. In the meeting room and Agorà space, interactive smart board, a 4k video projector, smart TV and wheelchair accessible PC workstation.
Accomodation: 15 bedrooms (45 beds) with an ensuite bathroom with a shower, air conditioning and balcony. In every room, key cards to save energy, organic body care products with natural ingredients,bed lines and towels made by certified organic fabrics, tapestry and fabrics woven on hand-operated looms, android box and full HD TV.

The Story

eco-Ostello LOCRIDE is a property confiscated from 'ndrangheta in 2005. The initial repairs and maintenance works were carried out by Locri City Council with funding from a National Operational Programme. Today eco-Ostello LOCRIDE is a modern hostel with fifteen triple rooms with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and private balconies.

The Locri City Council tried to assign it through a public tender, for a free 10-year management. However not a single project was submitted in this first bid. It was a sign of ‘ndrangheta’s power. It was at this time that GOEL decided to take action by bidding in the second tender, which it won. After 10 days from the news of GOEL’s victory, the building was heavily damaged by unknown persons and the hostel could not open to the public as scheduled. This act was meant to intimidate GOEL, Locri City Council and public institutions. It did not work. Together they responded by organising a key-giving ceremony.

Through "I Viaggi del GOEL", a tour operator promoting responsible tourism, the Hostel is the accommodation of choice for high school students from Northern and Central Italy who come to Locri to learn about legality. In July 2020, Ostello LOCRIDE was included in the 'Legalitour' project organised by the Italian Ministry of Education and the Italian parliamentary Antimafia Commission, whose memorandum of understanding was signed in Locri.
